Prenatal massage is a type of therapeutic massage that helps to ease pregnancy pains and prepare the body for a successful birth. Boca Raton pregnancy massage therapy enhances muscle tone, improves circulation, relieves stress and physical fatigue, and helps remedy many of the common discomforts associated with pregnancy. Prenatal massages are a natural, safe and drug-free option for managing pain and stress during pregnancy.
We customize each session to address our patients’ unique needs and preferences. Massage is performed by having the expectant mother lie on her side propped up with pillows or using a specially-designed maternity cushioning system. Our goal is to offer expectant mothers a soothing, relaxing and revitalizing experience.
During pregnancy, a woman’s body changes shape to accommodate the growing fetus. Physiological and hormonal changes include a protruding abdomen, increased back curvature, pelvic changes and postural adjustments. As the uterus expands to accommodate the growing fetus, the body’s joints naturally loosen to accommodate this growth. Pressure from the baby’s head and increased body weight can cause pain in the lower back, groin area and thighs. Many women experience sciatica pain, lower back aches, shoulder and neck pain, as well as headaches.
Pregnancy massage therapy alleviates stress on weight bearing joints and the musculoskeletal system caused by these physiological changes. This helps to reduce back and neck pain while supporting women's health. Regular massages during pregnancy significantly reduce pain in the pelvis and hips. Prenatal massages also alleviate stress on the knees, which can be significantly impacted by the extra weight of a baby’s growth.
Therapeutic pregnancy massage also increases the flow of oxygenated blood reaching the fetus. This helps to flush out toxins from the body while bringing the growing fetus essential nutrients it needs to thrive. Massage improves digestion, reduces fatigue and can also help reduce swelling in the lower legs and hands.
Most importantly, massage is a powerful mind-body therapy. Regular treatments help prepare the body for a successful birth by promoting relaxation and deep breathing. Massage also helps to stabilize hormone levels and reduce anxiety. Massage treatments help expectant mothers unwind and release this emotional stress. Our massage therapist’s gentle, nurturing touch provides women with much-needed emotional support during this exciting and challenging time.
Our massage therapist can also demonstrate self-massage techniques and stretching exercises to use in between treatment sessions. In general, we recommend weekly appointments in the third trimester as the body experiences the greatest physical discomfort and prepares for childbirth.
We recommend that all expectant mothers check with their primary care physician prior to scheduling a pregnancy massage therapy appointment. Depending on an individual’s wellness needs, prenatal massages may not be recommended. If you have specific pain management or wellness concerns, our massage therapist is happy to address these during treatment.
