Stand up (and sit up) straight. It sounds ridiculously simple, but the fact is that poor posture is a major cause of back trouble. Slouching, slumping or stooping can put the lumbar or thoracic muscles under extreme stress while also encouraging spinal misalignments and possibly even impingement of the sciatic nerve.

Get your feet checked. Even the most posture-conscious of us will have trouble standing and walking correctly if the feet cannot support the body’s weight evenly. Fallen arches, for instance, cause imbalances affecting every weight-bearing part of the body. If you spend a lot of time on your feet, this might well be the cause of your aching back.

Lose weight. Obesity contributes to all kinds of health problems, including musculoskeletal pain. The more weight the spinal column must support, the more prone it is to misalignments, sore muscles, bulging discs and sciatica. Shed those extra pounds, and your back may thank you with the gift of pain relief.

Stop the stress. Emotional stress tends to create physical stress, and the resulting tight muscles can cause stiffness and pain. Massage therapy is often helpful for loosening those tired, sore back muscles and restoring not only your flexibility but also your peace of mind.

Get your alignment checked. You do it for your car, so do it for yourself! An evaluation of your spinal alignment can reveal problems easily treatable through chiropractic adjustment, spinal decompression or other non-surgical methods.
