Preventing Sports Related Back Injuries

Back related sports injuries are very common. They can occur due to lifting wrong, falling, twisting and overuse of the back muscles. Our Boca Raton chiropractor would like to help you avoid back injuries and heal current and old back injuries so that you can continue playing your favorite sports.

Stretch and Warm Up

The number one way to prevent sports related back injuries is to thoroughly stretch your upper and lower back and your arms and legs. This loosens the muscles and helps prevent sprains and strains. You should also warm-up by walking or performing another low-impact exercise for five to 10 minutes. Warm muscles are less prone to injury.

Exercise

Playing sports and participating in activities requires endurance, strength and flexibility. Individuals should spend time training with weights and cardio equipment to adequately prepare for their sports. Simply playing the sport or participating in the physical activity is not enough to build muscle and endurance.

Cool Down and Rest

After participating in a physical activity, take time to cool down for five minutes, which could be accomplished by walking at a regular pace for five or 10 minutes until your heart rate slows. If you are injured during the course of your activities, stop the activity and rest for 24 to 48 hours. If pain and inflammation or swelling are still present, schedule an appointment with our chiropractor in Boca Raton for further treatment.
